District Strategic Plan

The Beaufort County Board of Education began discussions on a new district strategic planning process in April 2013.  A 67-member Steering Committee composed of educators, parents and community stakeholders developed new vision and mission statements, as well a set of core beliefs.

Action Teams were then formed to develop quality indicators and work processes in five areas: Purpose and Direction, Resources and Support Systems, Teaching and Assessing for Learning, Documenting and Using Results for Continuous Improvement, and Governance and Leadership.  The five Action Teams conducted a series of meetings and online discussions before completing their initial reports in October 2013.

Community members then had the opportunity to review and comment on those initial reports before they were submitted in November 2013 to the district Steering Committee, which discussed the reports and suggested edits and revisions.  The Action Teams incorporated those changes into the five reports, which were combined into a single document that was approved by the Board in April 2014.

Our district’s strategic plan looks at where we are right now, sets goals for where we want to be in the next five years, then determines the best ways to get there.  We plot our course accordingly, knowing that we will have to make adjustments made along the way until we reach our goal.

Because the entire community contributed to this process, the Beaufort County School District’s strategic plan reflects our values and aspirations.  It also has clearly stated long-range goals and measurable mileposts so that we can focus our work and monitor progress.

The Beaufort County School District, through a personalized learning approach, will prepare graduates who compete and succeed in an ever-changing global society and career marketplace.

Vision

We will work with families and our diverse community to ensure that students perform at an internationally competitive level in a learning environment that is safe, nurturing and engaging.

Core beliefs

We believe:

  • Every student can learn using his or her valuable and unique talents and skills.
  • Learning takes place when the physical, emotional, social and intellectual well-being of all students is assured at every level and during every transition.
  • High expectations of the school community positively impact student success.
  • Early childhood learning experiences form the foundation of future school success.
  • Students learn best when they are engaged and provided with opportunities for problem solving and active participation.
  • All students are entitled to learning experiences so that they can become competent and confident in the skills and knowledge needed to become successful and productive citizens.
  • Investment, involvement and connection of all members of the school community are essential to a student’s success.
  • Frequent informal and formal assessment aligned to clearly defined learning objectives will provide improved student achievement.
  • The collection, analysis and use of data from a variety of sources are critical to making decisions.
  • Students should be prepared to compete and contribute in a changing global and multilingual society.
