Workers' Compensation

The district is self-insured for workers' compensation insurance coverage.  Our third party administrator is the PMA Group. The District provides coverage for our employees; vendors, such as food service and maintenance, have their own policy.

The South Carolina Workers' Compensation Law is designed to provide medical and monetary benefits for an employee who sustains an accidental injury arising out of and in the course of his/her employment. The law provides medical care to bring about the earliest possible recovery from the injury, a percentage of wages and salary lost during the injured employee's disability.

Procedures:

If you should experience an injury, however slight, for any reason, please do the following:

  1. Notify your supervisor immediately.
  2. Ask your supervisor, school office manager, or school nurse to provide you with the necessary paperwork to document your injury.  You will need to fill out the “Incident Report,” and your supervisor or office manager at your school will submit a claim for you on-line.
  3. If you need to see a doctor, you must get a medical authorization form, and you must visit a doctor’s office that is approved by the Beaufort County School District’s insurance carrier.  Do not visit your family physician without prior authorization or the visit may not be paid for by Workers’ Compensation Insurance.
  4. After visiting the doctor, give copies of all paperwork that the doctor gives you to your supervisor who will send the copies to the District Office.  This is especially important for orders to remain out of work.  The District tries to accommodate all light duty requests.
  5. If your injury is a critical emergency visit the closest emergency room or clinic, and contact your supervisor or the District Office as soon as possible.
  6. Keep in contact with your supervisor and the District Office representative on a regular basis.
