Hilton Head Island High alters bell times
to help alleviate campus traffic congestion

BEAUFORT – Beginning Jan. 7, 2019, Hilton Head Island High School will make minor schedule changes aimed at alleviating traffic congestion problems around the campus.

Principal Amanda O’Nan said that starting high school 15 minutes earlier each day, and also dismissing 15 minutes earlier, will help reduce the amount of traffic caused by the high school’s close proximity to Hilton Head Island Middle School.

Both the middle and high schools currently begin classes at 8:45 a.m. and dismiss for the day at 3:45 p.m.  Beginning Jan. 7, the middle school will continue with that schedule but the high school schedule will begin classes at 8:30 a.m. and dismiss at 3:30 p.m.

O’Nan said the 15-minute schedule change will be particularly helpful at dismissal because it will allow many high school students to clear the campus by the time the middle school dismisses.

She added that the schedule change had been discussed and endorsed by the high school’s parent groups, students, and faculty and staff.

Arrival and dismissal times at the two elementary schools located at the Hilton Head complex – Hilton Head Island International Baccalaureate Elementary and Hilton Head Island School for the Creative Arts – will be unaffected by the schedule changes at the high school.

Arrival and dismissal times at other district high schools also will not be affected by the Jan. 7 changes at Hilton Head Island High.
